The Common Ledger

LOCAL QUESTIONS. CLEAR RECORDS. ROOM FOR MORE THAN ONE STORY.

ANALYSIS / PUBLIC SPACE

Twenty more hours
across four branches.

Four branch libraries and one proposal. What changes when opening hours are treated as a shared resource?

The question is when.

A library can be on the map and still be out of reach at the moment a reader needs it. Opening hours describe time as well as access. The proposal adds a half again to each branch’s current allocation.

That uniform increase makes the arithmetic simple. It does not tell us what a real library could staff, what readers would prefer or whether every neighbourhood would benefit equally.

More time is a proposition.
Better access needs evidence.

A real analysis would compare demand, staffing, transport and cost.

What the numbers leave out

The total is the sum of the four rows; change is proposed minus current. No survey, prediction or external data source is implied.

A full report would give a dated source, units, coverage, missing-data treatment and corrections before using the same composition.
